The Dog of the Reptile World

Blue Tongue Skinks (BTS) are renowned for their docile, curious, and personable temperament. They tolerate handling exceptionally well, making them one of the best “first lizards” alongside bearded dragons.

Vivarium Setup

Adult BTS require a minimum 4ft × 2ft × 2ft wooden vivarium. They are ground-dwellers and do not climb, so floor space is prioritised over height. Provide deep, loose substrate (topsoil/playsand mix) as they love to burrow.

Diet: The 40/50/10 Rule

  • 40% Protein: Lean turkey mince, snails, dubia roaches, eggs.
  • 50% Vegetables/Greens: Butternut squash, collard greens, dandelion leaves.
  • 10% Fruit: Blueberries, mango, banana (occasional treats only).

Temperature Requirements

  • Basking: 35–40°C
  • Cool end: 22–25°C
  • Night: No lower than 18°C

Lifespan

With proper care, Blue Tongue Skinks live 15–20+ years. This is a significant commitment.
