Best Dog Car Seat Covers for 2021

If you are driving with your dog in the backseat of the car, you’re probably concerned about two things – the condition of your car seats, and their safety.

Travelling with your pet and going to new places is great, but becomes less great if your car interior looks worse for wear afterwards. Dogs are also just at as much risk of being injured in a car accident as humans are, which is why it is vital to follow guidelines on travelling with your dog in the car.

A dog car seat hammock can not only protect your seats from mud, hairs and claw marks but will also prevent your dog from slipping down into the footwell in response to sudden braking or losing their footing.

These are the best available to buy.

    Buying Guide

    Car Seat Cover Types

Some people just make do with a blanket, but there are benefits to using a dedicated car seat cover for dogs.

First of all, they are more secure. With loops which go around your car seat headrests, they won’t slip and slide off or become uncomfortable, which is vital given that your dog can’t always be attended to without distractions when you’re driving.

You can buy bench covers which just go on your seat and leave the footwell open, but we would always recommend using a hammock style seat cover where possible. This closes off the footwell, so they can’t fall down it – which can happen even if you’ve used an appropriate car dog harness.

    Size

Most double car seat covers are the same size – around 145cm by 140cm, making them pretty square in shape. This is seen as a pretty universal fit for all cars, and the straps which go around the headrests can be adjusted in length in most cases.

But do measure your car first. Very large minivans, family cars and pickup trucks may need something larger, and likewise, coupes and microcars may need something smaller!

    Material

Opt for something which is both safe and slip-resistant as well as something which will protect your dog from scratching or dirtying the car seats.

Most are made from oxford material, which is a type of cloth that is strong, resistant to tear and wear and will be easy to clean when the time comes.

    Other Buyers Ask...

Which car seat cover will fit on my front seat?

Never allow your dog to sit in the front seat with you on a journey. Not only can they be a distraction or hazard, but they are also less protected in case of a crash.

If you need a cover for a single-seat, opt for one with a full-length zip which can halve the seat cover.

Can I still use their car harness?

Yes. There will be a way to access the seatbelt clip through a little gap in the fabric. However, you may struggle if you need to use the actual fitted seatbelts as opposed to a separate clip.
