The Golden Rule: NEVER Use a Heat Mat Without a Thermostat
An unregulated heat mat will overheat. This causes thermal burns on your reptile‘s belly (they cannot feel the heat building from below until the damage is catastrophic) and is a serious fire risk. A thermostat is not optional — it is life-saving equipment.
Best Thermostats
1. Habistat Mat Thermostat
The UK industry standard. Simple, reliable, and specifically designed for heat mats. Controls temperature to within 1°C.

2. Microclimate Evo Lite
A premium digital thermostat with an LED display. Offers pulse-proportional control for ceramic heaters and dimming control for basking lamps.
Best Heat Mats
Heat mats should cover no more than one-third of the vivarium floor to ensure a proper thermal gradient.

When to Use Overhead Heating Instead
Modern best practice increasingly favours overhead heating (Ceramic Heat Emitters, Deep Heat Projectors) over heat mats, as it more closely mimics natural sunlight heating from above. Heat mats are still useful as supplementary background warmth or for rack systems.
