Breed Overview
The Scottish Fold is known for its uniquely forward-folding ears, giving it an “owl-like” appearance.
The Health Controversy
The genetic mutation that causes the ears to fold (Osteochondrodysplasia) also affects cartilage and bone development throughout the entire body. Many welfare organisations including the BVA strongly advise against breeding them due to the chronic, painful arthritis they inevitably develop.
Care
Owners must handle them very gently, particularly their tails which can become stiff and inflexible. Lifelong joint supplements are practically mandatory.
