In the UK, every dog must wear an ID tag in public places — it’s the law under the Control of Dogs Order 1992. Failure to comply can result in a fine of up to £5,000. This is separate from the microchip requirement (compulsory since 2016). Both are legally required.
What Must Be on a UK Dog ID Tag
| Info | Required? |
|---|---|
| Owner’s surname | ✅ Legal requirement |
| House number, street & postcode | ✅ Legal requirement |
| Mobile phone number | Highly recommended |
| “I am microchipped” | Recommended |
| Dog’s name | ❌ NOT recommended — assists thieves |
Engraved vs QR Code Tags
| Feature | Engraved | QR Code Smart Tag |
|---|---|---|
| Info capacity | Limited (2-4 lines) | Unlimited (online profile) |
| Updatable? | ❌ Must buy new tag | ✅ Update anytime |
| Lost dog alerts | ❌ | ✅ Instant notification + GPS pin |
| Privacy | Address visible to all | Hidden — contact via secure form |
| Cost | £3-10 one-off | £10-20 (some need subscription) |
| Durability | Excellent (stainless steel) | Good (depends on material) |
Tip: Even with a QR smart tag, include at minimum your surname and postcode engraved on the tag to comply with UK law — not everyone knows how to scan QR codes.
