Hamster Care Guide UK 2026: Complete Setup, Diet & Health

🔄Last Updated: 4 March 2026

Hamsters are one of the UK’s most popular small pets — but they are also among the most commonly misunderstood. The majority of commercial hamster cages are far too small, exercise balls cause extreme stress, and cotton wool “nesting” material can be fatal. This guide covers everything you need to provide genuinely good hamster care, drawing on current veterinary guidance and welfare standards.

Essential Care Overview

Cage Size

The absolute minimum for any hamster is 100cm × 50cm floor space (German veterinary standard, widely adopted by welfare organisations). Most commercial “hamster cages” in UK pet shops are drastically below this. A large bin cage, aquarium (80+ litres), or Niteangel/Pawhut enclosure is recommended. See our cage guide for options.

Bedding Depth

Hamsters are natural burrowers — they need a minimum of 15cm (6″) of bedding depth, with 25-30cm being ideal. Paper-based (Kaytee Clean & Cozy) and aspen shavings are the safest substrates. Never use cedar, pine, or scented bedding — aromatic oils cause respiratory damage. See our bedding guide.

Diet

A species-appropriate pellet or muesli mix (with daily portion control to prevent selective eating), supplemented with small amounts of fresh vegetables 2-3× weekly and occasional protein (mealworms, cooked chicken). Dwarf hamsters are diabetes-prone — sugar must be strictly controlled. See our food guide.

Exercise & Enrichment

A solid-surface wheel is essential (not optional) — minimum 20cm diameter for dwarfs, 28cm+ for Syrians. Supplement with tunnels, chew toys, foraging enrichment, and deep bedding for burrowing. Exercise balls are NOT recommended — they cause extreme stress and prevent proper ventilation. See our wheel and toys guides.
