Why Crate Train?

A crate provides a safe den for your puppy to retreat to, aids immensely in toilet training, and keeps them safe when you cannot supervise them. It should never be used as punishment.

Step 1: Introduction

Leave the door open. Toss high-value treats inside and let the puppy fetch them. Feed their meals inside the crate with the door open.

Step 2: Closing the Door

Once comfortable, close the door while they are eating or engrossed in a KONG toy. Open it immediately before they finish. Gradually increase the duration.

Step 3: Leaving the Room

Step out of sight for 10 seconds while they are crated. Return and reward quiet behaviour. Slowly build up to longer periods.

FAQ

Should I cover the crate?

Covering the crate with a breathable blanket can help make it feel like a secure, dark den, which encourages sleep.
