The Perfect Companion Bird

Cockatiels are widely considered the ideal “first parrot” in the UK. They are affectionate, relatively quiet (compared to larger parrots), and famous for their ability to learn whistles and tunes. Males will often serenade their owners with elaborate melodies.

Cage & Environment

Minimum cage size: 60×45×60cm for a single bird, though larger is always recommended. Cockatiels are dusty birds — their feathers produce a fine powder (powder down) that coats surfaces. An air purifier in the bird room is a worthwhile investment.

Diet

A mix of high-quality pellets (Harrison’s or Roudybush), supplemented with fresh vegetables (broccoli, carrot, leafy greens) and a minimal seed mix. Seed-only diets are dangerously deficient in Vitamin A and cause fatty liver disease.

Reading the Crest

  • Flat against head: Fear or aggression — back off.
  • Straight up: Startled, alert, or curious.
  • Relaxed, slightly back: Content and comfortable.

Night Frights

Cockatiels are prone to “night frights” — sudden panicked thrashing in their cage at night. Keep a dim night light near the cage so they can see their surroundings if startled. Cover three sides of the cage with a breathable cloth.

Lifespan

With proper diet and veterinary care, cockatiels live 15–25 years. This is a long-term commitment.
