Myth Busting: Bettas Do NOT Belong in Bowls
The biggest lie in fishkeeping is that Bettas thrive in tiny bowls or vases. In the wild, they inhabit warm, shallow rice paddies spanning hundreds of square metres. The minimum ethical tank size for a single Betta is 20 litres, with a gentle filter and a heater maintaining 24–27°C.
Setup Essentials
- Heater: Non-negotiable. Bettas are tropical fish. Room temperature in the UK (18–20°C) is dangerously cold for them and suppresses their immune system.
- Filter: Essential, but the flow must be gentle — Bettas are poor swimmers. Sponge filters or baffled hang-on-back filters are ideal.
- Plants & Hides: Bettas love resting on broad leaves (Anubias is perfect) and hiding in caves. Avoid sharp plastic decorations that tear their delicate fins.
Can Bettas Live With Other Fish?
Male Bettas must NEVER be kept with another male. They will fight to the death. However, a single male can peacefully coexist with calm, non-fin-nipping tankmates in a sufficiently large tank (40L+): Corydoras, Kuhli Loaches, and Nerite Snails are ideal companions.
Common Health Issues
- Fin Rot: Usually caused by poor water quality. Increase water changes immediately.
- Velvet: A parasitic infection causing a gold “dusting” on the body. Treat with aquarium salt and darkness.
- Swim Bladder Disorder: Often caused by overfeeding or constipation. Fast for 2–3 days, then offer a blanched, deshelled pea.
