Description

One of the most effective and highly recommended cat and dog wormers are the range of Panacur wormers. Veterinarians across the UK have advised pet owners to use these products regularly every three months since it is often difficult to recognize the symptoms of intestinal worms. In the UK, there are at least eight different types of intestinal worms that can infect felines and roughly a dozen that infect canines.

A single syringe contains enough Panacur to treat 9kg bodyweight of adult cat or dog. If it is used to treat kittens or puppies, then a smaller dose should be given every day for 3 days, and a single syringe will fully treat kittens or puppies to a total bodyweight of 6kg. (eg 6 kittens weighing 1kg each). For full dosing instructions, see the datasheet below.

As such, de-worming your pet using Panacur paste to promote better animal health is a wise decision. If you keep horses, there is also Panacur Equine Paste. Dog wormers such as the aforementioned de-wormer paste are called "anthelmintic" which describes any product/substance that attacks and destroys parasitic worms.

Another factor to consider whenever you are using Panacur Paste is that the product can also be administered to pregnant cats or dogs and will not harm a foetus. This product comes packaged in plastic syringes containing five grammes of the product. It needs to be dispensed as far back in your cat or dog's mouth as possible. Once your pet has finished its daily feeding, simply squeeze the paste from the dispensing syringe to the back of their tongues.

You also need to administer another treatment of Panacur paste when natural parasitic re-infection occurs. We also advise pet owners to re-administer the treatment at intervals of six to eight weeks if you have recently acquired a cat or dog from an animal shelter or kennel. Animals from these establishments could easily be exposed to these intestinal parasites whilst being cared for there.

55 Fantastic, no sickness

Worming the dogs would usually mean both being sick, no matter what we tried before. This is the first wormer which had no negative effect on any of the dogs, so will definitely buy this again.

One dose only?

Hannah Sharpe

Is this one single dose - can you save any left over for next worm for a puppy?

  • VioVet Staff

This medication can be used for multiple doses and shared between animals. If stored according to the packaging requirements with the cap replaced then it will keep for 28 days after opening or until the expiry date stated on the packaging, whichever is shorter.

Can panacur be given to a nursing cat

  • VioVet Staff

This information is not in the medication datasheet, therefore I have contacted the manufacturer who have advised the following:

We would not expect any problems to arise from the use of this product during lactation in the bitch or queen. Extra care should be taken to ensure accurate dosing.
Fenbendazole does not cross into the milk and so puppies and kittens can be safely treated at the same time as the bitch/ queen if required without fear of over-dosing the young.

Therefore a lactating queen would be dosed as per the adult routine dosing regime.

Panacur dose

Ola

Please, does Panacur at a dose of 50 mg / kg affect all nagastro-intestinal nematodes and cestodes, or only giardia, heart and lung worms?

  • VioVet Staff

The datasheet for this medication states the following regarding the 50mg/kg dose:

For the treatment of clinical worm infestations in adult dogs and cats or Giardia spp. infections in dogs and puppies, orally administer 1 syringe graduation per 1 kg bodyweight daily for 3 consecutive days (= 50 mg fenbendazole/kg bodyweight daily for 3 days).
For the control of lungworm Oslerus (Filaroides) osleri in dogs administer 1 syringe graduation per 1 kg bodyweight for 7 consecutive days (= 50 mg fenbendazole/kg bodyweight daily for 7 days). A repeat course of treatment may be required in some cases.

This means it will cover routine roundworms in dogs at the 50mg/kg 3 day dose course.
Fenbendazole does not treat cestodes (which includes tapeworms), heartworm or the most common cause of lungworm in dogs. The datasheet does state it covers Oslerus (Filaroides) lungworm but it is Angiostrongylus Vasorum that is the lungworm that needs to be covered. You will need a tapewormer (praziquantel, e.g. Droncit) and a lungwormer (moxidectin e.g. Advocate, or milbemycin e.g. Milpro) for this use.

Panacur Wormer Paste

Alicia

I have a litter of pups with weights from 500g to 600g, they are 2 weeks old and a small breed.
I am not sure if I can give this wormer because their weight is not high enough to be safe.
What would you suggest I give them if this is the case.
Thank you.

  • VioVet Staff

Panacur paste is only safe for use in pets 1kg or over. If you are looking to use Panacur for your pups then I advise using the Panacur Oral Liquid. This is safe for use in <1kg pets as the dose can be calculated more accurately and it is licensed for use in pets of this weight.

12 wk puppy

Loz

Is this okay for a 12wk old French bulldog? Getting a bit confused with the product types and doses!

  • VioVet Staff

Yes this product is safe for a 12 week old puppy. If you would like tailored worming advice then I recommend contacting our customer services on [email protected] so one of our vets or pharmacists can advise.

Possible Colitis

Sonya S

Can Panacur be used to help colitis?

  • VioVet Staff

Panacur contains fenbendazole which is a wormer. If worms are present then they may be causing or contributing to the colitis, so therefore may help. However Panacur is not indicated to treat Colitis specifically.
I recommend discussing this with your vet. Our blog 'Help my pet has vomiteddiarrhoea'd everywhere!' also has some useful advice on the topic.

Pregnant bitches

Lyn

What is the best wormer for pregnant bitches

  • VioVet Staff

Panacur is a great wormer for pregnant bitches, but I recommend using the Oral Solution as this has a pregnant bitch doseage and can be used on the pups when they are born too:

Pregnant dogs
1 ml per 4 kg body weight daily from day 40 of pregnancy continuously
to 2 days post-whelping (approximately 25 days) (= 25 mg
fenbendazole/kg body weight daily).

Puppies and kittens under six months of age
0.5 ml per kg body weight daily for 3 consecutive days given by mouth
after feeding to unweaned animals or mixed with food for weaned animals
(= 50 mg fenbendazole/kg body weight daily for 3 days).

Puppies should be treated at 2 weeks of age, 5 weeks of age and again before leaving the breeders' premises.

Does Panacur paste kill Giardia in puppies?

  • VioVet Staff

Yes Panacur can be used to treat Giardiasis. Below is the recommended doseage for this:

Small Animal Formulary 8th edition

  • Giardiasis: 50 mg/kg p.o. q24h for 5 days.

If you are treating Giardia then be aware that reinfection is a high possibility. Ensure the environment and your puppy are as clean as possible during treatment. Any ingestion of faeces (even just licking of surfaces where faeces have been present) can lead to reinfection.

David Anthony Holland

How old must kittens be before you can use this product

  • VioVet Staff

There is no minimum age for the use of Panacur (fenbendazole). It is recommended the first treatment is done at 2 weeks old.
